Recently, at the tender age of 78 years young, my mother’s health has taken a sudden turn for the worse. Unable to easily walk or even stand up, dealing with dizzy spells that caused her to fall, and fighting a nasty infection, she needs a lot of help. As my brothers and I realized the seriousness of the situation, my brain was bombarded with questions. Who could stay with her? Who could keep track of doctor appointments and medications? Who could prepare healthy meals? Who could find competent medical professionals? Who was even qualified to figure it out? Even with all the questions and doubts, I knew there was only one choice - do whatever is necessary to help no matter how difficult the task.

The parallels between handling my mother’s situation and the stories of both Gideon and Esther are clear. Let’s start with Gideon. When the angel spoke to him, Gideon wanted proof that it was the Lord (NIV Judges 6: 17). But this did not end all his doubts. God commanded Gideon to save the Israelites. Gideon’s doubts went into overdrive. He asked for evidence (twice!) that God would be with him. (NIV Judges 6: 37, 39)!

And, don’t forget Esther. She was thrown into a situation with absolutely no control over the outcome. From the start, the situation was uncomfortable and risky. Esther had to leave her home, follow strict rules, participate in rituals, and not anger anyone in the process. Esther did everything that was necessary to save the Jewish people while accepting the fact that she may die as a result (NIV Esther 4: 16).

Lord, thank you for giving us opportunities to learn trust in You. In your grace, see our doubts and meet us where we are to guide our thoughts and actions. Forgive our fears and teach us to remember that You are with us always. Give us strength to make difficult decisions even when we don’t understand Your plan to work all things for good.
